The international Cospas - Sarsat Programme provides a satellite based system, which relays distress alert transmissions to rescue authorities. Emergency locator beacons are used to locate vessels (EPIRB), aircraft (ELT) and persons (PLB). In Finland these transmissions are received by Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre MRCC, which furtherly relays the information to relevant authorities. Aviation related distress alerts are relayed to aviation Rescue Coordination Centre RCC, located in Helsinki-Vantaa airport.

All emergency locator beacons must be registered in Finland. Distress alert transmission carry only a limited amount of information, and therefore additional information is collected in the emergency locator registry. Comprehensive and up-to-date information is essential for search and rescue personnel to solve situations, to find persons in distress and to apply appropriate actions timely. These rescue operations are urgent by nature, and as comprehensive information as possible will help to save lives.
