If you want to work as a driving instructor you, will need a driving instructor’s licence issued by Traficom. The licence gives you the right to provide driving instruction for category B driving licence. If you want to provide instruction for other driving licence categories you must produce separate proof of your qualification.
You can be issued with a driving instructor’s licence if
- you are at least 23 years old
- you have taken the compulsory modules of the specialist qualification for driving instructors that concern management of driving-school activities and work as a driving instructor
- you have at least category B driving licence that has been valid for at least three years
- you meet all Group 2 requirements for fitness to drive
- you are not subject to a driving ban.
You cannot be issued with a driving instructor’s licence if
- you are subject to a driving ban
- during the past five years, you have been found guilty of driving while intoxicated, driving while seriously intoxicated, causing a serious traffic hazard, or causing a traffic hazard showing disregard of traffic safety
- you have been subject to a driving ban during the past 12 months because you have been found guilty of other traffic offences
- during the past five years, you have been found guilty of homicide or causing bodily injury or other offence indicating violent behaviour, a sex offence or a similar offence and the act indicates that you are manifestly unsuitable for the profession of a driving instructor, or
- based on the register held by the police, you have otherwise shown with your actions that you are manifestly unsuitable for the profession of a driving instructor in view of your way of life or personal characteristics.
Applying for a driving instructor’s licence:
Submit the application at an Ajovarma office (External link). (External link)The following documents must be appended to the application:
- a certificate showing that you have taken the compulsory modules of the specialist qualification for driving instructors that concern management of driving-school activities and work as a driving instructor, or the Traficom decision showing that you have the necessary qualifications on the basis of a qualification received in an EU/EEA country
- a medical certificate of the health requirements for Group 2 that is no more than six months old if you do not have a Group 2 driving licence, or a comprehensive medical certificate, in which the effects of ageing are considered, if you are aged 68 or over.
