The Reisjärvi fibre optic project participated in the competition as a joint project carried out by R-Net, Netplaza and Elenia. The idea of the competition is to look for new operating methods that could facilitate the coordination of infrastructure construction requiring excavation work between different actors and make this practice more common.
Winner of the business category of the Joint Construction Project of the Year 2019!
The application submitted by the Reisjärvi project states that the residents refer to the project as the miracle of Reisjärvi: fibre optic broadband coverage in the project areas is exceptionally high, even 80–90 per cent. Joint construction with Elenia has influenced the high subscription rate: a large electricity company has worked in genuine cooperation with a small broadband operator, R-Net. Netplaza’s role is to manage the project.
Elenia has adopted a policy of marketing fibre optic broadband to customers as a deal which ensures that power lines will be placed underground; farms, in particular, have an interest in improved overall reliability.
“The laying of each metre of optical fibre and electricity cables in this project has been coordinated as far as technically possible. In Reisjärvi, 72 kilometres of optical fibre network has been built. Of this length, 59 kilometres have been laid in a trench shared with the electricity network, with a joint construction rate of 82 per cent. Such high co-location rates can only be achieved when the plans are coordinated on time, a review is carried out in the field before the construction begins, and the operators have a genuine willingness to engage in joint construction that benefits both parties”, explains Hanne Nivala, Business Development Manager at Netplaza.
A well-planned tendering process is a precondition for a cost-effective price: this, too, requires careful joint preparation.
“Additional benefits achieved include a customer-centric approach, as all infrastructure work on a site is carried out once and for all, rather than digging up the yard several years in a row”, sums up Sami Puputti, CEO of RNet.
Joint construction continues this summer: building work has been launched or is about to begin on Kinnulanrannantie road in Aholamäki, in Kinnulanranta and Mäntyperä, on Savolanmäentie road and Vuohtolahdentie road in the town centre as well as on Pihtiputaantie road between Susisaari and Hylkiranta. An early bird price for the fibre optic broadband subscription is still available in areas where the work is only about to begin.
