Finnish media outlets have suffered significantly as a result of the coronavirus pandemic and the restrictions implemented to combat it. Meanwhile, the societal importance of reliable and accurate journalism has been thrown into sharp relief. Against this backdrop, government aid will be made available to support journalism. The aid will be allocated by the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency Traficom.

The aid is aimed at promoting diverse, high-quality journalism produced in Finland by various media outlets. It is earmarked for media companies with operations in Finland, whose advertising sales and revenues have suffered a significant adverse impact as a result of the epidemic.

The funds will be granted by the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency, which is currently preparing the application process. Applications are set to open in October, and more detailed information on the process will be made available at a later date.

The aid will be granted to all eligible applicants by the end of the year. Further provisions on the eligibility criteria are given in the relevant government decree.
