As the aviation authority, the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency Traficom issued the Malmi Airport Association a licence to operate the Helsinki-Malmi aerodrome in 2016. In addition to the requirement to maintain flight safety, the conditions include the right of the association to use the land as an aerodrome. As the leasehold’s expiry at the end of 2019 has been challenged, Traficom will not yet make a decision on the licence to operate the aerodrome.

The City of Helsinki has announced the leasehold of the land area to have expired at the end of 2019. The expiration of the leasehold has been challenged by the Malmi Airport Association and the Friends of Malmi Airport Association. The airport association responsible for the aerodrome’s safety matters specified in the operating licence, has informed Traficom that it wishes to continue to operate the aerodrome and to fulfil its aviation safety obligations after the turn of the year.

Traficom supervises aviation operators to maintain and develop aviation safety. As regards the licence to operate the Helsinki-Malmi aerodrome, the agency considers that the permit issue cannot yet be resolved as the justification for the expiry of the aerodrome’s operating licence, i.e. the termination of the lease agreement, has been challenged, and the case is pending before the court. Traficom is impartial in the dispute and wishes to avoid any conflict between its actions and the future legal ruling. Therefore, no changes will be made to the validity of the permit to operate the Helsinki-Malmi aerodrome until further notice.
