The Finnish Transport and Communications Agency Traficom has started issuing ship certificates electronically to ships sailing under the Finnish flag as of 25 October 2021. The validity of issued certificates can be verified via Traficom’s e-services. Finland is among the first countries in Europe to offer this service.

“We will no longer be sending ship certificates to clients in paper format. Issuing these documents and offering a way to verify their validity electronically promotes the digitalisation of maritime transport. We are among the first countries in Europe to offer this service. Electronic process also makes it easier to send certificates to clients, especially in situations where the ship is currently abroad,” says Aleksi Uttula, Head of Maritime Inspections and Surveys.

The validity of electronically issued documents can be checked on Traficom’s e-services based on the register number of the document. The service does not require users to log in and can be accessed with any internet browser. The service is intended for authorities and shipowners in particular.
