Many radio devices, such as phones, headphones and tablets, will need a USB-C port in the future. Manufacturers, importers and vendors must ensure compliance with the new requirements, which will enter into force on 28 December 2024.
The EU Radio Equipment Directive sets uniform requirements for various devices operating wirelessly on radio frequencies. The new additional requirements must be taken into account in radio equipment entering the EU market.
Impacts on manufacturers, importers and vendors
It is important for manufacturers, importers and vendors to familiarise themselves with the new requirements for radio equipment.
- Manufacturers: The new requirements must already be taken into account in the design of devices.
- Importers and vendors: It must be ensured that devices sold on the EU market meet the requirements.
USB-C port requirements apply to many device groups
The new requirements apply to the following radio equipment if the equipment supports wired charging:
- mobile phones, tablets, digital cameras, headphones, headsets, handheld video game consoles, portable speakers, e-readers, keyboards, mice, portable navigation systems and earphones
The requirements apply to devices entering the EU market from 28 December 2024. Devices placed on the EU market before 28 December 2024 are not covered by the changes (for example, devices previously delivered to the vendor's warehouse in the EU). However, if the device is delivered to the EU market after the date, the new requirements will apply.
For laptops, the new requirements will enter into force on 28 April 2026.
New requirements for radio equipment – what will change?
New requirements:
- USB-C charging port: The device must have it.
- Fast charging technology: If the device supports fast charging, it must support at least USB Power Delivery charging technology.
- Labelling and documentation:
- In connection with packaging and price information in distance selling (such as online shops), new labels must be used to indicate whether the device comes with a charging device and what the charging features of the device are.
- Labels and information on charging features must also be included in the instructions for use.
- In the future, consumers will have the right to purchase devices without a charging device. In addition, clear labels make comparing the charging features of devices easier. This allows consumers to choose between buying a charger with the new device or using an existing charger.
"The new requirements will harmonise USB-C as the charging port. The aim of the labelling requirements is to ensure that before buying a device, you can check the packaging or online shop whether it comes with a charging device and what the charging features are," says Senior Specialist Milla Kuokkanen.
It is important that consumers pay attention to new labelling when making purchases in the future.
Traficom monitors compliance
Traficom monitors radio equipment sold on the Finnish market. The market surveillance of radio equipment will also cover the new requirements when they enter into force.
