Have you made any structural modifications to your car or changed the number of seats for example? Check whether your car needs a modification inspection.

Take your vehicle for a modification inspection if

  • its structure has been changed in a way that has a more than a minor impact on the vehicle’s safety or emissions
  • its structure or purpose of use have been changed in a way that has a material impact on the information entered in the register
  • its structure or purpose of use have been changed in a way that has an impact on taxes on the vehicle or a material impact on statutory fees charged for the vehicle
  • it has been changed so that its classification is changed
  • at least 25 per cent of the parts of a vehicle taken in use in 1960 or later have been changed since first registration.

If the structure or purpose of use have been changed in a way that has an impact on vehicle taxation, the modification may result in the need to pay car tax (External link).
