Traficom is responsible for arranging for the manufacture of registration plates for vehicles in Finland. The vehicles that are owned by the Finnish Defence Forces and vehicles that have been registered to the Åland Islands have their own plates.

Depending on the vehicle class of your vehicle, it will have either one or two plates. In connection with first-time registration, the vehicle receives EU registration plates from the inspection station. The registration number is determined at random.

If your vehicle has been fitted with EU registration plates, you are not required to display any separate nationality sticker (FIN) when driving in the EU area. Outside the EU, the nationality sticker is mandatory.

Cleaning registration plates

In traffic, registration plates must be clearly legible, which makes it important to clean the plates regularly. When selecting a cleaning agent forregistration plates, you should pay attention to the materials used in producing the plates, as some substances may damage them.

You can use these substances to clean the plates:

  • conventional household cleaning agents (e.g. washing-up liquid)
  • aromatics-free mineral turpentine
  • solvents containing aliphatic hydrocarbons (e.g. engine cleaner).

Do not use these agents for cleaning the plates:

  • detergents containing active chlorine
  • solvents containing significant amounts of aliphatic alcohols, ketones or esters or aromatic solvents (e.g. ethanol, acetone, toluene, thinner)
  • solvents containing chlorinated hydrocarbons
  • substances intended for paint stripping
  • petrol
  • windscreen washing fluid.
