ADAS - Blind spot monitor

A blind spot monitor (BSM) detects other vehicles in the driver’s blind spots, meaning areas that the driver cannot see via the side mirrors or side windows without turning their head, and warns the driver of when it is unsafe to change lanes.

A blind spot monitor will warn the driver anytime there is another vehicle in one of the vehicle’s blind spots.  This warning usually consists of an illuminated icon or blinking light on one of the side mirrors. This visual warning may also be accompanied by an audible warning or vibration of the steering wheel or seat.

The most advanced blind spot monitors can intervene in the operation of the vehicle by automatically adjusting the steering or braking to prevent the driver from changing lanes. However, the driver always has the option of manually bypassing the system.

Some blind spot monitors will also show the driver a video feed of the blind spots when the driver uses a turn indicator with the intention of changing lanes. This feed is usually displayed on the instrument panel.

Familiarise yourself with your vehicle’s manual.

The manual will provide you with the manufacturer’s detailed instructions on how to use the system and tell you what to do in situations where the system might not function correctly or at all. For example, some blind spot monitors cannot detect motorcycles or other objects of similar size.

The sensors of a blind spot monitor are usually located on the corners of the rear bumper, while the cameras, if applicable, are mounted on the side mirrors. Please refer to your vehicle’s manual for the exact locations of the sensors.

Always keep your car’s sensors, cameras and radars clean to ensure that the system functions correctly.

Please keep in mind that while a blind spot monitor does provide additional protection, it is no substitute for checking the mirrors and looking over your shoulder.
