ADAS - eCall system

The purpose of eCall, the pan-European in-vehicle emergency call system, is to ensure that in the event of a road accident, the emergency response centre is immediately informed of the accident, its location and some other relevant information needed by rescue services.

When the car determines with the help of its sensors that it has suffered a collision, the eCall device in the car automatically dials the emergency number 112 and connects the persons inside the car to the emergency response centre.

The call is routed to the nearest emergency response centre. The device also provides the emergency response centre with information, such as the coordinates of the accident site, the direction of the vehicle and the identifying information of the vehicle.

If necessary, you can also initiate an emergency call manually by pushing the car’s eCall button. In many cars, this button is located on the ceiling near the rear-view mirror and has the letters SOS on it. The button should only be pressed in real emergencies!

Some vehicles give you the option of choosing whether the SOS button connects you to the nearest emergency response centre or the vehicle manufacturer’s own service centre, which can provide help with other situations besides emergencies as well. Do not determine this by testing the button, however! Instead, you should refer to your car’s manual to see how the button works in your car.
