ADAS - Intelligent speed assistance

Intelligent speed assistance (ISA) systems are intended to reduce accidents resulting from speeding. Intelligent speed assistance displays the current speed limit on your car’s instrument panel and warns you with visual and audible warnings if you are about to exceed it.

Intelligent speed assistance systems can also use tactile warnings, such as accelerator pedal vibration. However, unlike the speed limiters used on lorries, intelligent speed assistance does not prevent you from exceeding the speed limit. Intelligent speed assistance can also be used in connection with adaptive cruise control, in which case the car will automatically adjust its driving speed to comply with the current speed limit.

Intelligent speed assistance systems determine the current speed limit primarily by reading traffic signs. In addition to this, some systems can make use of digital map data.

Intelligent speed assistance may malfunction if the car’s camera reads a speed limit plate on the back of a lorry driving ahead of you as a traffic sign, for example.

Familiarise yourself with your vehicle’s manual. The manual will tell you exactly where the system’s sensors are located. The manual will also provide you with the manufacturer’s detailed instructions on how to use the system and tell you what to do in situations where the system might not function correctly or at all.

It is always up to the driver to observe speed limits. Always keep your car’s sensors, cameras and radars clean to ensure that the system functions correctly.
