With the help of these instructions, selling a car, motorcycle, moped or any other vehicle will be easy and safe. Please note that some of Traficom’s e-services and PDF forms are only available in Finnish and Swedish.
Submit a notification of transfer or give the buyer a digital certificate or part II of the registration certificate
If the seller submits a notification of transfer, the buyer does not necessarily need a digital certificate or part II of the registration certificate to register the change of ownership (External link).
Create a certificate using Traficom’s electronic services. If you like, you will receive the certificate by e-mail - you can also print it in PDF format.
- The certificate is the only means by which the buyer can register ownership of the vehicle electronically using Traficom’s or an insurance company’s electronic services .
- When part II is used, the registration must take place at a registration site.
If you sell a vehicle abroad or in Åland, you must provide the buyer with both parts of the registration certificate.
NB! A new registration notification, such as decommissioning from traffic use, will invalidate a previously printed notification section. Where necessary, you may order a new registration certificate using Traficom’s electronic services or at an inspection station that offers registration services .
Always provide a Deed of Transfer
Please draft a Deed of Transfer or a bill of sale for the vehicle for yourself and the buyer. Verify the buyer’s identity and indicate the buyer’s Social Security number or business ID number in the Deed of Transfer. You will receive a Deed of Transfer pre-filled with your vehicle data while creating a certificate using Traficom’s electronic services .
Ensure an exemption from payments by submitting a notification of transfer
By submitting a notification of transfer you will ensure that you are exempt from payments from the actual date of transfer onwards, also in cases where the buyer does not register the vehicle in their own name. If you have sold your vehicle, you may no longer decommission it from traffic use.
For notification of transfer, you will require the buyer’s Social Security number or business ID number, which you will find in the Deed of Transfer or bill of sale signed with the buyer.
If the vehicle buyer does not have a Finnish Social Security number or business ID, you may submit a notification of transfer at an inspection site providing vehicle registration services.
You may submit a notification of transfer:
- to Traficom’s electronic services
- At your insurance company’s customer service or electronic services
- At an inspection station that offers registration services
Keep the vehicle sale certificate, such as a receipt of the payment or a Deed of Transfer or bill of sale signed by both parties, in order to verify the accuracy of the information you have submitted where necessary.
