EU register plates were introduced in Finland in 2001. All vehicles are automatically fitted with EU plates, but you can also request for plates that follow the previous plate model.

If your vehicle has been fitted with EU register plates, you are not required to display any separate country codes (External link) when driving in an EU area. Outside the EU, a nationality sticker is required.

You can exchange any older of registration plates for EU plates at an inspection site that provides registration services. You will be issued a new set of registration plates and numbers immediately. You must return your old plates to the inspection site.

If you would like to keep the same registration number, a set of EU plates with your old registration number can be made for you. The delivery time for the plates is two weeks. You will be required to pick up the plates from the inspection site after they have been delivered and also return your old plates.
