After identification, select your service role: personal services, acting on behalf of another person or acting on behalf of a company/an organisation.
Remember to register a new car, motorcycle, moped or another vehicle for the first time before taking it on the road.
Usually, a new vehicle is insured and registered for the first time at the car dealership. If you buy a vehicle from a dealer who does not register the vehicle, you can carry out the first registration yourself. In this case, the vehicle has to have a registration number and registration plates. You will also need a certificate from the seller.

First register your vehicle before you take it on the road or attach the registration plates to the vehicle. The date of the first registration notification is entered in the Transport Register as the date of commissioning for the vehicle.
You can use the vehicle as soon as the first registration is done and you have attached the registration plates to the vehicle.
If a natural person is not marked as the holder of a company vehicle in the first registration, the company has to report a person in charge of use.

When can you first register a new vehicle electronically?
- You are the owner or holder of the vehicle, and you are at least 15 years old.
- The new owner or holder of the vehicle has a Finnish personal identity code or a valid business ID.
- The vehicle is covered by valid motor vehicle liability insurance.

Pay the first registration of a new vehicle
You can save the receipt if you want. You can also later check that the first registration was carried out successfully on the My Activities page.
The first registration fee also includes the registration plates issued to the vehicle.
The service uses an automated decision-making procedure.

If you cannot carry out the first registration electronically, you can contact your insurance company or an inspection station that offers registration services. As a new owner, you will need either a digital certificate from the seller or a prior notification certificate to complete a first registration.
The car dealership or finance provider can perform the registration for you in connection with the purchase of the vehicle.
If necessary, you can also use the e-service provided by your own insurance company.
Additional conditions and restrictions on first registration with a digital certificate
If the owner is a minor who does not have the right to drive the vehicle in question, the information of the holder who is using the vehicle must be provided. The holder must be old enough to be allowed to drive the vehicle in question.
The registration service cannot be used in the following situations:
- Missing registration number: The vehicle does not have a valid registration number. You can perform the registration at an inspection station that offers registration services.
- The right to change registration details has been restricted: The vehicle has a registration pendency entry in the register.
- The vehicle is in special use: it is a rescue vehicle, a hearse or a veterinary vehicle. You can perform the registration at an inspection station that offers registration services.
- The vehicle has been stolen: The police have marked the vehicle as stolen.
