When can you receive a vehicle tax refund?

A vehicle tax refund may arise, for example, when

  • the vehicle is decommissioned or deregistered
  • the taxpayer changes
  • the vehicle's registration details change so that the vehicle becomes exempt from vehicle tax or the amount of tax decreases
  • the taxpayer is exempt from vehicle tax.

How can you apply for a refund?

Frequently asked questions about vehicle tax refunds

If you do not apply for the refund in My e-Services, the vehicle tax refund will be paid to the account you have provided 12 months after the refund arises, unless it has been used to pay the vehicle tax for one of your vehicles.

If you have not provided an account number to Traficom, the refund will be paid as a payment order through Danske Bank.

If you have become liable to pay vehicle tax for another of your vehicles after the refund arose, the refund may have been used to pay your unpaid vehicle tax. The credited amount is shown on your vehicle tax bill.

Overpaid vehicle tax will be credited on the next vehicle tax bill unless you claim a refund.

If you have not yet provided your account number or you want to receive the refund more quickly, use the Give account number for tax refunds service.

If the refund is not shown in My e-Services, it may have been automatically credited towards the vehicle tax of one of your vehicles or the refund may already have been paid. The credited amount is shown on your vehicle tax bill.

You can apply for a vehicle tax refund on behalf of another person by submitting a written refund application. You will need the taxpayer's consent or a power of attorney.

Private customers cannot provide an account number or apply for a refund on behalf of another person in My e-Services.

You cannot provide a foreign account number in My e-Services.

If you want the vehicle tax refund to be paid to a foreign bank account, apply for the refund in writing using the vehicle tax refund application.

Danske Bank will send you a notification when your vehicle tax refund has been paid as a payment order (money order). You can collect the payment from the bank by the due date stated in the notification. The bank charges a service fee for processing the payment order.

Read Danske Bank's instructions for collecting a payment order.

If you do not collect the payment order by the due date, the funds will be returned to Traficom after approximately 60 days. You can then apply for the refund to be paid to your account in My e-Services.

If the refund concerns a deceased person's estate, submit an electronic refund application for the estate. Traficom will pay the refund based on the application once the funds have been returned to Traficom.

If you have a valid non-disclosure for personal safety, your vehicle tax refund can only be paid to a bank account. Traficom cannot disclose your protected contact details to the bank for sending a payment order.

You can check the status of your vehicle tax refund and apply the refund in My e-Services. You can also apply the refund using a paper form.
