The Finnish Transport and Communications Agency Traficom participates in the EUSBSR PA Safe/Ship project. The objective of the project is to ensure the safety, security and sustainability of maritime transport in the Baltic Sea region.
The EUSBSR PA Safe/Ship project fosters the coordination for two policy areas (PAs), Safe and Ship, which hold an important role for leading the safety, security and sustainability of maritime operations in the Baltic Sea region. The European Union Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region (EUSBSR) is the first Macro-regional Strategy in Europe and PAs with defined actions are the main tool to drive regional development and alignment.
The coordination of the EUSBSR PA Safe/Ship project has been led by two institutions: for Ship, the Finnish Transport and Communication Agency (Traficom), and for Safe, the Swedish Maritime Administration. Both of the PAs has its actions, which contribute to achieving the overall EUSBSR objectives.
PA Safe aims to make the Baltic Sea Region a leading region on maritime safety and security
PA Safe is steered by the four actions:
- Providing reliable navigational conditions to the Baltic Sea
- Developing winter navigation to meet future challenges
- To be a forerunner in digitalization and automation
- Ensure accurate preparedness and response for maritime accidents and security issues
PA Ship aims to facilitate the transition to sustainable shipping and to make it a business opportunity
PA Ship is steered by the three actions:
- Support measures, including digitalisation, to reduce emissions from shipping;
- Support research on emerging thematic challenges related to clean shipping and its impact on environment and biodiversity in the Baltic Sea;
- Support development of shore-side facilities to enhance clean shipping measures, including infrastructure for climate-neutral and clean fuels.
The project aims to activate the countries in joint policy work, and engage partners from more of the participating countries in the activities by arranging events and workshops across the Baltic Sea Region for establishing new project ideas and facilitate networking.
Funding is provided by the Interreg Baltic Sea Region programme, and the total budget of the project is 710 000 euros. Implementation time is 1.1.2022 - 31.12.2024.
