Under the current plan, all nautical charts and fairway information will be renewed between 2021 and 2026. Those responsible for the maintenance of waterways will be contacted in connection with the changes made to the information concerning their waterways.
The depth and fairway information used in Finnish nautical charts will be renewed during the N2000 project. At the same time, the Finnish Meteorological Institute will begin the distribution of sea water depth information that is tied to the N2000 system.
The nautical chart reform process will last between 2021 and 2026. The reform process was initiated in the Bay of Bothnia region, after which it proceeds gradually through the Archipelago Sea to the eastern part of the Gulf of Finland. The first N2000 charts were published in 2021. You can follow the progression of the reform on Traficom's mapview (External link)service.
These changes will have little practical effect on the depth and fairway information presented in inland waterway charts and on the fairways themselves. The height of the N2000 reference level will be selected by water basin, and it will be near the reference level height used in the current NN vertical coordinate reference system. A more detailed implementation plan for inland waterway charts will be published at a later date.
Those responsible for the maintenance of waterways will be contacted in connection with the changes made to the information concerning their respective waterways. The change in the reference level used for depth information will not, in itself, affect the usable water depth of individual fairways. When combined together, a fairway’s navigational depth value and water level information will provide the same usable navigational depth as in the current system.
