Sale of used boat

The notification of transfer terminates the seller's obligations for the watercraft.

Transferring the e-certificate to the purchaser

The e-certificate is a digital code that is valid for 30 days. Create the e-certificate using Traficom’s electronic services. If you like, you will receive the e-certificate by e-mail — you can also print it in PDF format.

By means of the e-certificate, the new owner may easily register the boat on the Traficom website.

E-certificate

Always draft a deed of transfer

Draft a deed of transfer or bill of sale on the watercraft for both yourself and for the purchaser. Verify the purchaser’s identity and indicate the purchaser’s Social Security number or business ID number in the deed of transfer. You will receive the deed of transfer pre-filled with your watercraft data while creating a e-certificate using Traficom’s electronic services.

By means of the deed of transfer, the new owner may register the watercraft in their name using electronic services or otherwise.

Make a notification of transfer

Use of the notification of transfer ensures that your obligations for the watercraft end on the correct delivery date also if the purchaser does not register the watercraft in their name. If you have sold your watercraft, you may no longer deregister it.

For notification of transfer, you will require the buyer’s Social Security number or business ID number, which you will find in the deed of transfer or bill of sale signed with the purchaser.

The notification of transfer may also be used to replace the e-certificate. The purchaser may register the watercraft in their name by means of the notification of transfer alone.

Keep the sale certificate, such as a receipt of the payment or a deed of transfer or bill of sale signed by both parties, in order to verify the accuracy of the information you have submitted where necessary.

The instructions above are sufficient for most transactions. Sometimes additional advice may, however, be required.

When you sell a watercraft abroad or to Åland, do deregistration

You are selling a watercraft which you have not registered

The purchaser shall verify beforehand the owner indicated in the register and the registration of the watercraft.
