A motorcycle driving licence can be upgraded to a higher motorcycle category in three different ways, which are described on this page.
Upgrading a driving licence through driving instruction
You may upgrade your category A1 driving licence to a category A2 licence through driving instruction after turning 18 and when you have held a category A1 driving licence for at least 2 years.
You may upgrade your category A2 driving licence to a category A licence after turning 20 and when you have held a category A2 driving licence for at least 2 years.
Complete the driving instruction at a driving school. The instruction includes 2 theory lessons and 5 driving lessons. The instruction may not be provided with a driving instruction permit.
Book an appointment at Ajovarma to submit an application for a driving licence permit. Bring the certificate of instruction you have received from the driving school to Ajovarma.
You cannot apply for a driving licence permit electronically if you upgrade your driving licence through driving instruction.
Upgrading a driving licence by passing a handling and driving test
You may upgrade your driving licence from category A1 to A2 with a handling and driving test after turning 18 and when you have held a category A1 driving licence for at least 2 years.

You do not need to complete driving instruction.
You need a driving licence permit to take a handling and driving test. You cannot apply for a driving licence permit electronically if you upgrade your driving licence with a handling and driving test.
Upgrading a driving licence by taking a driving examinatio
You can upgrade your driving licence by taking a driving examination, i.e. the theory test, handling test and driving test.
You can take the theory test for the category A2 driving exam one month before you turn 18 and the driving test once you have turned 18.
You do not need to have 2 years of driving experience in category A1.
You can take a category A driving examination when you have reached the age of 24. You do not need to have 2 years of driving experience in category A2.
