A .fi domain name must be registered to its actual holder. Incorrect holder data may lead to the removal of the domain name.

The Finnish Transport and Communications Agency Traficom has removed more than 100 .fi domain names from the domain name register. The grounds for removal were that the holder data recorded for the domain names did not correspond to their actual holders.

In these cases, the domain names had been registered in the name of a privacy and/or proxy service provider, even though this was not the actual holder of the domain names. Under the law, a .fi domain name must always be registered to its actual holder.

“By ensuring that a domain name is registered to its actual holder, we promote cybersecurity in the Finnish internet,” says Sanna Sinisalo, Head of Unit at Traficom.

Registrars must ensure the accuracy of holder data

A .fi domain name must always be registered to its actual holder. The domain name registrar must ensure that the holder data are correct, up to date and sufficient to identify the holder.

Accurate holder data are a prerequisite for the validity of a .fi domain name. If incorrect or incomplete data are not corrected despite a request from Traficom, the .fi domain name may be removed from the domain name register.

Supervision continues

Traficom will continue to monitor .fi domain names and will take action on a case-by-case basis where holder data do not meet the legal requirements.

A privacy and/or proxy service

A privacy and/or proxy service is a service that registers a domain name in its own name instead of the actual holder. The service conceals the details of the actual holder.
