Your vehicle tax bill may arrive in Suomi.fi Messages – check your electronic messages
The Finnish Transport and Communications Agency Traficom reminds everyone liable to pay vehicle tax to make sure they have received their vehicle tax bill. A forgotten payment could lead to an unpleasant surprise on the road, as overdue vehicle tax results in a prohibition of use for the vehicle.
In April 2026, official mail became primarily digital for all adults who use public authorities' e-services.
Traficom also primarily sends vehicle tax bills electronically if the person liable for the tax uses an electronic channel for receiving official mail. The vehicle tax bill contains payment details, including the amount of vehicle tax payable.
"In practice, this means that you may now receive your vehicle tax bill as an e-invoice in your online bank, in OmaPosti or in Suomi.fi Messages. You will only receive your vehicle tax bill as a paper letter if you do not use any electronic delivery channels," explains Senior Specialist Antti Mört from Traficom.
It is therefore worth checking your electronic message channels, as reminders about unpaid vehicle tax may also be sent electronically.
What you need to know about activating Suomi.fi Messages
Suomi.fi Messages becomes available to you when you use strong electronic identification to log in to a public authority's e-service, such as MyKanta or MyTax. You will be prompted to activate Suomi.fi Messages when you log in for the first time.
You do not need to subscribe to electronic messages separately from each authority. Once you have agreed to receive electronic messages in one public authority's e-service, your consent applies to messages from all public authorities.
"You may have activated Suomi.fi Messages when logging in to MyKanta, MyTax or another public authority's e-service, for example. This means that your vehicle tax bill may now have arrived in Suomi.fi Messages instead of by letter post, even if you have not specifically asked Traficom to change the delivery method," Mört emphasises.
It is therefore important to check that your contact details, including your email address, are correct in the Suomi.fi portal. This ensures that you receive notifications when official messages arrive.
What to do if you are still waiting for your vehicle tax bill
You can check your vehicle tax payment details in Traficom's My e-Services. You will need to log in using strong electronic identification, such as your online banking codes.
"In My e-Services, you can check the tax status of each vehicle under Tax information and payment. This section shows whether the vehicle has any unpaid taxes," Mört explains.
You can also pay outstanding vehicle taxes using the Pay tax service in My e-Services.
Things to remember
Electronic vehicle tax bills can be sent to the person liable for the tax through one of the channels listed below. Reminders about unpaid vehicle tax may also be sent electronically. Remember to check whether you have received any information from us about your vehicle tax through:
- an e-invoice in your online bank
- OmaPosti
- Suomi.fi Messages
For business customers, Traficom delivers vehicle tax bills in one of two ways: as a company e-invoice if the company has specifically requested e-invoicing, or as a paper invoice by letter post.
Check your contact details in Suomi.fi. When you log in to Suomi.fi, we recommend checking that your email address has been saved in the service and that it is correct. This ensures that you receive notifications when official messages arrive.
Kivra users – please note the upcoming change! Kivra's digital mail service will no longer be available in Finland from 1 December 2026, when the service transfers to Posti. Traficom will therefore stop sending vehicle tax bills to Kivra after 31 October 2026. We recommend that Kivra users pay any invoices they have received through the service well before it is discontinued. If you use both Kivra and OmaPosti, your messages and invoices will be delivered to OmaPosti in future.
