Light aircraft pilot licence (aeroplane/helicopter)

With a light aircraft pilot licence (LAPL), you can fly solo with an aeroplane (A) or a helicopter (H) and take for example your friends as passengers. The licence does not give you permission for commercial aviation, but you can share the costs with your passengers.

A light aircraft pilot licence (LAPL) is an easier route to becoming a pilot than a traditional private pilot licence (PPL). If you hold a LAPL, you can act as pilot-in-command (PIC) on aeroplanes with a maximum take-off mass of 2,000 kg or less, carrying a maximum of three passengers. The right to exercise LAPL privileges does not require a traditional proficiency check. Instead, you must have recent experience. You can also complete a proficiency check to extend the validity of your licence by two years at a time.

How to obtain a private pilot licence

  • Step 1

    Age requirement

To apply for a LAPL(A/H), you must be at least 17 years of age.

  • Step 2

    Training

The training includes theoretical knowledge and flight instruction.

  • Step 3

    Medical certificate

To start flying solo, you are required to have a medical certificate.

  • Step 4

Theoretical knowledge examinations arranged by Traficom

You may participate in theoretical knowledge examinations after completing the theoretical knowledge instruction. You can take the examinations before you have fully completed your flight instruction.

  • Step 5

    Skill test

You can take the skill test after you have completed the theoretical knowledge instruction and flight instruction and passed Traficom’s theoretical knowledge examinations.

  • Step 6

The license is renewed every time an is made to add or change ratings or privileges to the license. The light aircraft pilot license can also be rewritten, for example, in cases where the back page of the license is full, due to a change of name of the license holder or to replace a lost license.

When rewriting the license, the following is required:

  • Class LAPL of the medical qualification certificate must be valid
  • At least one language proficiency must be valid

Please note that expired ratings, authorizations and privileges are not printed on the issued license.
